Capacity and Institutional
Building Strategy (CIBIS)
Trains leaders and activists
of the disability movement in organizational management, fundraising and how
to lobby and advocate for disability rights in their countries and in the
region. Strengthens the organizational structures of DPOs.
To fill the skill’s gap and to groom new and
young leaders in the disability movement of the region SAFOD runs the
Capacity and Institutional Building Strategy.
With the support of the Norwegian Federation of the Disabled (FFO)
SAFOD organized under that programme in the first half of the
African Decade several
leadership training workshops.
The Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) came into the boat in
2002 and offered DPO leaders from Southern Africa the opportunity to travel
to Japan and Thailand and to participate in a three-week training course and
exchange visit on “Mainstreaming and Empowerment of Persons with
Disabilities in Southern Africa”.
In all there will be a total of five training courses during the period of
support (2002 – 2006) and 50 leaders will have been trained.
SAFOD also received support towards this
programme and the African Decade from Action on Disability and Development (ADD)
and Disability Awareness in Action (DAA),
UK.
In May 2004 SAFOD held a management workshop for senior staff members of the
Disabled People’s Organisations from all ten member countries in Lusaka,
Zambia.
